Guest post: The Appeal Behind Erotic Fairy Tale Retellings by Tanya from Among the Muses

Today I am ceding the blog to Tanya, fantabulous blogger behind Among the Muses and The Forbidden Bookshelf (for those who love to read those steamy and racy stuff this is a blog you must subscribe to! ;-p), who was kind enough to talk to us about another genre of fairy tale retellings which we haven't really explored yet: the steamy, erotic fairy tale retellings! Yum :-)) So grab a cold drink, plug in your fans and read on, you'll discover a whole new world of fairy tales :-D
The Appeal Behind Erotic Fairy Tale Retellings

Before we get started, I'm going to ask that everyone grab a fan and a cool refreshment, because today I'm going to be talking about fairy tales that would have made even the prince stop in his tracks before kissing the beautiful Sleeping Beauty due to his questioning of why exactly she lived with seven men! :) Yes, I'm talking about the erotic kind of retellings. The stories that spin our innocent versions of fantastical Happy Ever Afters into delicious, naughty renditions. Where Sleeping Beauty really may have had seven men fulfilling her every need. *g*

Naughty retold fairy tales are making a steadily growing appearance in the adult literary world. Whether it's an erotic story set in a fantasy or historical setting, or a fairy tale twist on modern day experiences. Sexy renditions of our childhood favorites can appeal to readers who crave happily ever afters, but not through the eyes of our childhood naivety and innocence.

Cinderella Unmasked Demon Lover (Fairytale Fantasies)  Awakening Beauty: Fairytale Fantasies, Book 3

Earlier this year I invited Bonnie Dee, and Marie Treanor, to stop by my blog to discuss their Fairytale Fantasies series, and tell us why they thought erotic fairy tales are so appealing. I personally don't think Marie could have said it better!
Marie: Why fairytales? Well, everyone loves them. The whole romance genre is based around the idea of living happily ever after with a handsome prince (or princes) of one kind or another. And it seems to us that every woman, including ourselves, has a special place in our hearts for the stories we were told as children. Only we’re not children; we have more adult expectations and understandings of emotions, trust, respect and, of course, sex.

It really does make sense when you think about it -- even if you're not an erotica fan. Lovers of the romance genre can usually think back to those memorable moments where a fairy tale introduced them to romance as well as good overcoming bad. In other words, the heroine and/or hero get their HEA by overcoming an obstacle or threat. There seems to be an understandable appeal to only wanting to make those HEA's a little more conducive to our adult experiences and desires. And with erotic retellings, they appeal more to those who love extra smexin' in their reads!

Generally, all retellings carry the same fairy tale trope, but the author's imagination is what carries the spin on the plot, characters, and setting, and the same goes for erotic retellings. The only core difference is the scorch level. The following are examples of books I've either read or are on my TBR. But all have Goodreads and Amazon ratings of 3 or higher.

Cinderella Unmasked by Bonnie Dee and Marie Treanor
Three balls. Three sexual adventures. One true love.

In the years since her husband King Charming boarded a pirate ship to “find himself”, Queen Ella has ruled alone. Romantic love? It’s a girlish emotion. These days, her only confidant is her steward, Sebastian.

Five years is a long time to forego sexual pleasures. She’s the queen, after all…shouldn’t she be allowed a few indulgences? A masquerade is just the ticket to find fulfillment Charming never gave her. With Sebastian’s encouragement—and a little help from a fairy godmother—Ella prepares to make some magic.

The first masked stranger she dallies with gives her a taste of what she’s been craving. And it’s just not enough. A second ball follows. A third. Each one—and each anonymous man—sends her to new heights of sexual pleasure. And reawakens the notion that maybe, just maybe, love does not always lead to pain.

Her indiscretions have not gone unnoticed. As her stepfamily makes a move to take over the throne, Ella has nowhere to turn, no one to trust…except the men behind the masks…

Warning: This is the new “happily ever after”, strictly for grown-ups…

Rachel runs Rapunzel's, a high-end salon on the lower level of a downtown Chicago high rise and lives happily in self-imposed exile in an apartment at the top of the tower-that is until Jake Malden walks in with his teen daughter, Emma, and presents Rachel with a dilemma. Young Emma is determined to defy her mother's wishes and get her long, beautiful, untouched hair cut off so she can donate it to charity to honor a friend with cancer. Rachel's decision to cut the girl's hair starts a snowball of drama, turmoil and hidden secrets rolling downhill on a course with destiny that no one is able to stop, one that ultimately threatens not only Rachel's livelihood, but her slowly melting heart as well.

Red: A Seduction Tale by Maddie James
Garnet Boudreaux is going home. Not back to her nice little apartment in New York City, but to her childhood home in the bayou. She doesn’t want to go, and isn’t certain what will be waiting for her when she arrives. But standing there in the voodoo shop on Bourbon Street, in the middle of one helluva party, she’s told by Madame Madeleine Dupuis that she has no choice. She presses two pouches into Garnet’s hands, wraps a red cape around her, and tells her she must go—and go now—to see to her grandmother.

Max LeBlanc spies the lovely red-head across the street and knows in a heartbeat she is the one. A rougarou always knows when he’s met his mate. Some may call him a lycanthrope, a werewolf if you will, but in Cajun bayou lands he’s known simply as The Rougarou. He’d waited several hundred years for this moment, and for her. There is nothing left for him to do, but mark her and claim her as his mate. Soon.

There really are so, so many more, but this is just an example of the range of stories, settings, plots, and character spins that take retellings to a hot new level.

If your interest is piqued with finding more erotic fairy tale retellings but don't know where to start, the best way is to simply do a little searching. You can search on both Amazon and All Romance ebooks (ARe) with phrases like "adult fairy tales" or "erotic fairy tales", etc.. In addition, publishers such as Siren-Bookstrand, Samhain, Ellora's Cave, and Resplendance also have themed 'fairy tale' collections. Other times it may be best to search using fairy tale titles such as "Sleeping Beauty" then sift through the results. For example, Anna J. Evans, author of the Demon Bound series, also writes erotica and has a Perfectly Wicked fairy tale retelling series out, but is often not found by using the former search methods. And just FYI, the books in her series are $.74 right now at ARe!

Happy Reading and Happy Ever After!

I want to thank Stella for inviting me to participate in this fabulous Retold Fairy Tale event, and for her readers allowing me to share my thoughts!

Do you have any new erotic fairy tale retelling suggestions to share, are you new to this finding, or is this sub-genre not your thing?

After reading some of those charming and captivating fairy tales growing up, Tanya wondered why her fairy godmother had surrounded her with a never-ending supply of toads. Disheartened, she was surprised the day that her fairy godmother finally gifted her a prince -- albeit one with ADHD. But he was her manboy prince sent to finally give her her HEA. Well, more like HEAFN; With global warming there's only so many swishes and swirls a wand can make in a polluted atmosphere. You just have to take what you can get sometimes! After working for years with many princes and princesses in training in the governing lands called the 'classroom', she set off on a new yellow brick road called business management. Nowadays, Tanya lives in the entertaining kingdom called New Jersey and feasts her eyes on the enchanted land of The BIG Apple every morning, waiting to see and watch other people's dreams finally come true!
