Bout of Books Read-a-Thon Starting Line and Updates

You were going to read that week anyway, right? Read with us.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 13th and runs through Sunday, August 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 5.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. -From the Bout of Books 5.0 team

  • Bout of Books is a week long read-a-thon, run from 12:01am on Monday, August 13th through 11:59pm Sunday, August 19th in whatever time zone you are in.
  • Bout of Books is low pressure, meaning participants are only asked to push themselves to read more than they normally would during any given week. There is no competition between readers.
  • How much time a reader wants, and can commit, to read, tweet, or network with fellow bloggers is left to individual preference. All challenges and giveaways are optional.
  • Networking with fellow bloggers is actively encouraged, though never required. Co-hosts are there to facilitate blog hopping and interaction between participants.
  • Use Twitter to post updates throughout the read-a-thon. Everyone will be tweeting with the #boutofbooks hashtag.

You can join the fun and sign up HERE.

And here is my Goal Sheet (get yours from Bout of Books):

My Time Devoted to Reading

As I will be once again working all week (sadly no vacation for me now) my reading time will be limited, I'm planning to read all the way to and from work on the commute.

My Goals
  • Have fun (I'm sure I will ;-)
  • Read at least 5 books - Read 3
  • Try to interact with other participants - didn't have time at all as I was never home
  • Update my reading progress - couldn't really keep up with it either this time

Books To Read (For the moment, I'm sure I'll add to it)
  1. Seducing Cinderella by Gina L. MaxwellDONE
  2. Take it Like a Vamp by Candace Havens
  3. Pleasures of a Tempted Lady by Jennifer HaymoreDONE
  4. Not the Marrying Kind by Nicola Marsh
  5. Wrong Bed, Right Guy by Katee Robert - DONE

    Mini-challenges

Literary BFFs: Who would be your literary best friend? I think I would be literary BFFs with Lizzie Bennett from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. We would spend hours talking about the people around us and have fun enjoying all the entertainment our environment provides us with :-)

Passing Books: What do you do with books once you have read them?

I gift them usually. Either to family and friends or through giveaways on my blog. I like to spread the love.

Limerick Challenge: I had to write a bookish limerick, hm.. here it goes

Oh how I love, love, love reading
    There's nothing like stories enchanting
the soul and the mind and the dragons and the flies
one just has to give several tries
until we leave the world and our worries behind to enjoy our bookish fling!

Relocation Challenge: What if you relocated one of the books you are reading how would that change the story and the characters?

Well I choose The Oil Tycoon and Her Sexy Sheikh by Ros Clarke which is set in London, Scotland and then the beautiful exotic Persian Gulf... and relocate it to Antarctica!

Sadly no more bikini bathing on the turquoise sea, no more frolicking on the white sandy beach, no more delicious spicy exotic foods and colourful fish and corals. No, instead the h/h are so wrapped up in their anoraks even their eyes can't be seen. Everything is white and cold and impossible to see. Not really romance inspiring. Truth be told sounds quite white and blurry and boring. No wonder no stories are set in Antarctica but rather at exotic and warm locations with sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets! :-)

Character interaction challenge: "Take two characters from separate works of literature and show us how you’d imagine them interacting."

I choose Reid from Seducing Cinderella by Gina L. Maxwell and Lizzie Bennett from Pride and Preju

The Candy Challenge: What do you eat while you read?

As I usually read on the commute on my way to and from work I don't eat there, but there were a couple of books which made me quite hungry and envious of what the characters were eating, one of the most memorable ones was Table for One by Ros Clarke. The heroine is a restaurant critic and the hero a sexy chef, need I say more? lol :-D  DELICIOUS BOOK! :-)

A Book for Every Season: Name the perfect book for each season of the year! The book can either have the name of the season in the title, or — and this is the preferred way! — the book can take place in that specific season.

Spring: A Hint of Frost by Hailey Edwards - it starts out with snowy days and gradually the weather transitions into spring :-)

Summer: The Lucky Harbor books by Jill Shalvis, especially The Sweetest Thing, where the heroine wears a lot of sundresses ;-) Somehow with their cheerful covers they remind me of summer reads :-D

Autumn: Sweet Deception by Heather Snow - both the cover and some of the scenes (chilly rain, muddy roads) remind me of chilly autumn nights when it is best to curl up inside in front of the fire.

Winter: Any Given Christmas by Candis Terry and Secret Santa by Sierra Dean - I just LOVE holiday themed novels and these two were perfect! They captured wonderfully the spirit of the holiday while being sweet or scary :-D

    The Contemporary Challenge:

    1) Choose your favorite contemporary of 2012 (thus far)
    2) Choose your favorite contemporary COVER of 2012 (thus far)
    3) and explain your biggest *SURPRISE* contemporary book of this year.. (= the book you may have not expected to love, but did)

    And my answers:

    1) Favourite contemporary of 2012: Ride with Me by Ruthie Knox - I LOVED that book! (read my review)

    2) Favourite contemporary cover of 2012:

    3) Biggest contemporary surprise of 2012: Ride with Me by Ruthie Knox - I thought a book centered around a cross-country biking event would be boring and dull. I couldn't have been more wrong! Ride with Me by Ruthie Knox was terrific I loved it and it became one of my favourite books of 2012! :-D (read my review)

The Music Mini Challenge: Choose one book and match it with a song:

I pick Planning for Love by Christi Barth
~ Hopeless romantic Ivy Rhodes and anti-Cupid Bennett Westcott request the pleasure of your company for their disaster of a courtship ~

Wedding planner Ivy Rhodes is the best in the business, and she's not about to let a personal problem stop her from getting ahead. So when she's asked to star in the reality TV show Planning for Love, it doesn't matter that the show's videographer happens to be a recent—and heartbreaking—one-night stand.

Bennett Westcott admits he didn't handle his encounter with Ivy very well. But looking at her beautiful smile—and great body—through a camera lens every day? He can't be faulted for suggesting they have some no-strings fun.

The more time they spend together, the more Ben realizes Ivy isn't the wedding-crazed bridezilla he'd imagined. But if he doesn't trust himself to make a relationship last, how can he convince Ivy to give him another chance?

and the song that would be the perfect soundtrack for the book is Wishin' and Hopin' that we saw and heard in My Best Friend's Wedding with Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett:

    Wrap Up

Number of pages I have read in total: about 790 - sounds more impressive like this than when I look at how many books I've got around to read.
Total number of books I've read during the event: 3
And I participated in all mini-challenges except those which were reserved for US. (and the Book poetry one because I was reading ebooks and it required a photo of physical book spines).

Overall I'm a bit disappointed with my participation with both what I got to read and interact: I was working and then when the weekend rolled around, today being my birthday (Aug 20) my whole weekend was full of celebratory events organized by friends and family so I had zero time to chill and read this time. So hopefully next time I'll have more time!

ps. the winner of the Virtual Travels or Reading Around the World will be posted later today. Thanks for the great participation! I'm glad you all had so much fun with it! :-D
