Today I'm welcoming to the blog an author after my own heart: an author who portrays strong women in her novels as she believes in women capable of being independent and courageous, please give a warm welcome to Berinn Rae and read on to discover more about her motivations and inspirations, and you could even win a fantastic prize pack!

A lady never says, “F^ck”
by Berinn Rae

Women with kickassitude. That’s who I write about. They come from all places, have all different kinds of beliefs, and come in all sizes and colors, and all species (I write romantic SciFi/Fantasy, after all). Their only shared trait is that they have strong spirits, i.e. they aren’t afraid of taking a new challenge head on and refuse to dwell on the past. I love writing strong-spirited women, primarily, because I feel women (in general) don’t have enough faith in themselves. And, I’d love to see that change.

Growing up, we’re taught all kinds of rules on how a woman is supposed to behave. She’s supposed to look a certain way, she puts herself second to others’ needs, she takes care of everyone and everything around her, she doesn’t cuss, she cooks and cleans, and so on and so on.

I say, f^ck that.

To put it simply, I believe to be a strong woman is about having faith in herself, which is reflected in everything she does. This is easier said than done, no thanks to all the messages that are drilled into us throughout our lives. Now, there’s nothing wrong with doing things like cooking (I enjoy cooking, despite the often dismal results). What I’m saying is to do what you love, not what you’re expected to do. Being strong is about sifting through all the noise and discovering you.

Have you ever felt that you’re just going through the motions, that you’re missing something in your life? I challenge you to take a step back (try to take a day off for yourself if possible) to focus on you: What makes your heart beat? What’s important to you? Is there a chasm between those two answers and what your current life looks like? Take a hard look, and you’ll discover that some small changes could help you discover—or rediscover—your own kickassitude—and replace that empty feeling with something much more fulfilling.

Amelia Earhart
Growing up, I was blessed to have parents who didn’t frown on my tomboyish pursuits, such as collecting comic books and flying airplanes. I was a devotee to inspirational women, such as Amelia Earhart, and even some fictional women (I’m a huge Marvel comics fangirl!). All those women (and men, too) shaped me as the person I am today. Honestly, I wish I had more faith in myself, but I have more faith than a year ago, and I know I’ll be even stronger a year from now. And I’m good with that.

Now it’s sharing time… and GIVEAWAY TIME!

Share one woman who has influenced your attitude or actions in some way. One lucky commenter will win an e-copy of Stealing Fate (a novella). Since we’re celebrating the spirit of women, I’ll also throw in eBooks of Knightfall and Hellbound (the first two books in the Guardians of the Seven Seals series). That’s 3 books to the winner!

I look forward to your comments!
