Behind the Scenes Secrets of the Bachelor Firemen
by Jennifer Bernard

A firehouse filled with sexy, heroic, single firemen … sounds like a total fantasy, right? Well, the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel may be fictional, but they had plenty of real-life inspiration. For one thing, sexy, heroic, single firemen DO exist, and not just in my head. Want names and phone numbers to prove it? Sorry, I can’t go that far.

But I can let you in on some behind-the-scenes real-life inspirations for the Bachelor Firemen series.

For instance, did you know that there’s a former child actor from the movie “The Sandlot” working as a firefighter for the Hollywood fire department? When I learned that piece of information, the proverbial light bulb went off over my head. Former child actor … Bachelor Firemen? What a perfect match! But I didn’t want to stick too close to reality, so I decided to change the actor’s gender and make her a female firefighter. Then I decided to make her a major TV star who craved a different life, one outside the spotlight. That’s how Sabina Jones from SEX AND THE SINGLE FIREMAN was first conceived.

Another very important piece of reality inspired the hero of SEX AND THE SINGLE FIREMAN, Chief Roman. The more I researched the books, the more I was struck by how significant 9/11 still is for the firefighting community. Many firehouses have 9/11 memorials; some have pieces of the World Trade Center wreckage. No first responder has forgotten that terrible day, and how many of their fellow firefighters and paramedics lost their lives. I decided that one way or another, I had to incorporate 9/11 into a book. That’s how Chief Roman’s personal history came to be. (He’s from New York, and his wife, a firefighter herself, died while trying to evacuate the North Tower.)

Let’s talk about nicknames. Firefighters love giving each other nicknames. I have a lot of fun with that fact in the series. I made up most of my characters’ monikers, but one of them is the real-life nickname of an unknown firefighter in Los Angeles. Meet “Psycho.” He’s the hero of the next book, HOW TO TAME A WILD FIREMAN. Some say he lives up to the nickname, others think the right woman will settle him down. We’ll see!

My biggest takeaway from reality is that firefighters have a great sense of humor. It helps them cope with the life and death nature of the job. It’s in that spirit that I made my Bachelor Firemen books light-hearted, sexy and romantic. Real life is serious enough; sexy firemen to the rescue!

One Fine Fireman by Jennifer Bernard

Book #0.5 in the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel series

Kirk, aka Thor, one of San Gabriel’s infamous Bachelor Firemen, certainly lives up to his nickname. He’s tall, handsome, and has a chiseled body worthy of any Viking god. But he’d give it all up for one glance from her.

Sweet, shy Maribel has no idea he’s been pining for her. There’s nothing he’d like better than to sweep her off her feet and show her just how exquisite their love could be. But Kirk has a secret and he won’t let anyone get close, least of all the sexiest woman he’s ever met.

Can a feisty little dog and an even feistier little boy help these star-crossed lovers to find the true love they both so richly deserve?
