Meet Miles and Portia
by Jess Michaels

Hi everyone and thanks so much to Stella for allowing me to stop by (again) and play for the day. You are getting me during a very exciting period because just three days ago (November 19) my most recent book came out. Pleasuring the Lady is the second book in my latest series, The Pleasure Wars (which started in July with Taken By the Duke).

A release week is always exciting and a little scary for an author, but it’s always made easier (and harder, too, I guess) when you really love the story. Pleasuring the Lady was a story I didn’t exactly mean to tell. Originally The Pleasure Wars series was only going to be two books, Taken By the Duke and Beauty and the Earl.

And then I met Portia. If you haven’t read Taken By the Duke (so what are you waiting for, rush on out there and grab it), Portia is the best friend of my heroine, Ava. She and Ava are like sisters and the more I got to know her, the more I knew she had to have a story of her own. She’s a wallflower because of a mysterious problem with her mother and I wanted to know more about that.

So I delved into her as I tried to think about what her story could be. Ultimately, I realized that her mother suffers from very severe mental illness. She is a kind woman, but her outbursts and other problems have put a black mark on Portia, who is left to take care of her mother and protect her from the brother who is determined to make their mother go away entirely and stop embarrassing him. This is her situation at the beginning of Pleasuring the Lady.

Now a lot of people wanted Portia to be with Liam, who is Ava’s brother and the main character in Beauty and the Earl (April 15, 2014). I thought about that for a while, but I thought Portia deserved a little more. Liam wasn’t ready for love yet and I didn’t think he would ever make Portia, with her long years of unrequited crush, happy. I wanted her to fall in love, not finally get someone to love her who she’d been waiting around for.

And that’s when I thought about Miles. He was a secondary character in my bestselling book, An Introduction to Pleasure, which came out last June. Everyone fell a little bit in love with him (including me and except for the heroine from that book, thankfully) and I started thinking… what if he and Portia knew each other? What if he was the rake who always threw her a bone and danced with her?

What if he encountered her in a situation where he didn’t recognize her and was drawn to her in the most wicked of ways? And what if… once he realized who she was and they were forced into a marriage, he decided that he would give her the happiness she deserved, without realizing that giving someone happiness was a big symptom of falling in love?

I wanted a man ripe to fall in love with a woman who deserved someone to fall in love with her. And man, did I ever get it. Now I just hope you’ll go pick it up and enjoy it just as much. Because it’s release week and I’m super nervous.

Jess Michaels always likes the "good parts" when she reads romance, so it makes sense that she writes erotic books. Book #2 in the Pleasure Wars series

Once the game begins, there is no tearing your gaze away.

Her mother's madness and her father's and brother's irresponsibility have relegated Lady Portia to the life of a wallflower. The only shining light in her life is her best friend, Ava, who is suffering a rift with her own brother.

Portia's quest to help takes her to the notorious Donville Masquerade in the hells, where behind the safety of a mask she witnesses shocking public acts of sin. And succumbs to the touch of Marquis Miles Weatherfield.

Unfortunately, they're discovered. And now, tainted by scandal, she and Miles are destined for a marriage neither of them want. But Portia makes a bargain that raises even Miles' eyebrows.

In return for saving her mother from the asylum, Portia will do anything Miles wants in bed. Shocked by his driving desire for Portia, Miles agrees. As they explore every wicked desire, every forbidden act that pleases them, they discover something that goes far deeper than flesh. But the lies that brought them together could be the very wedge that drives them apart.

Warning: This book contains wicked encounters, erotic voyeurism, lies, a brief threesome, and unexpected kindnesses.
