Let It Snow Books: Guest post by Jessica Scott + Giveaway

Today I am happy to welcome to the blog the lovely Jessica Scott, author of the heartbreakingly emotional Coming Home series, which I love. Jess has a brand new holiday novella that got released recently and that made me curious as to how it was for her as a serving officer to be away from her family during the holidays. Please give Jess a warm welcome and you could even win her holiday novella! :-)

Christmas Away From Home
by Jessica Scott

I've spent many Christmases in different places during my career in the army but one Christmas I'll never forget is my Christmas in Iraq. We'd just gotten into country and we were busy RIPing with the outgoing unit. I was a brand new lieutenant, busy trying to get the network in and the guys we were replacing had been there for 15 months. Even looking at the front end of my 12 months didn't look that bad.

Northern Iraq was dusty and colder than I expected but there wasn't any snow. I remember trying to get situated and living out of a duffle bag for almost two weeks down in Kuwait. When we finally got to Mosul, it wasn't what I expected. I ended up sharing a CHU with my husband and I was busy counting my blessings that.

There's always an attempt when you're deployed to try and bring the holidays to you, to make them a little less sad. There were a couple of little Christmas trees in the TOC and a bunch of candy canes laying around but I'll never forget two lonely ornaments on the bare tree outside our CHU. One was blue and a little dusty, one was a green ball.

I remember being sad, looking at those two ornaments and feeling guilty for feeling sad. After all, I'd be with my husband, even if I was with my kids. I had it pretty good, right?

But that didn't change the emotions then and even though time fades the memories, I think they will always be with me. Take a moment to remember our service members deployed away from their families during the holidays, no matter where they are.

I'd like to give away a digital copy of Carponti's Christmas novella. I loved writing his story and I'm so touched by the overwhelming positive response to him and Nicole.

[Edited to add: Little military glossary:

RIP: relief in place
CHU: containerized housing unit (pronounced CHOO)
TOC: Tactical operations cell]

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she's a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.

Oprah has called her. True story.

Her debut novel BECAUSE OF YOU launched Loveswept, the first Random House digital imprint.

She's written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and is currently a company commander stationed at Fort Hood.

Most recently, she's been featured as one of Esquire Magazine's Americans of the Year for 2012.

I'll Be Home For Christmas by Jessica Scott

Book #2.5 in the Coming Home series

There's nothing in the world Army Sergeant Vic Carponti loves more than his wife and his country. Smart-mouthed and easy tempered, he takes everything as a joke...except his promise to come home to his wife, Nicole, for Christmas. As he prepares to leave for his latest deployment into Iraq, Vic will do everything he can to shield his beautiful, supportive wife from the realities of war...and from his own darkest fears.

As a career army wife, Nicole Carponti knows just what to expect from her husband's tour of duty: loneliness, relentless worry, and a seemingly endless countdown until the moment Vic walks through the door again. But when the unthinkable happens, Nicole and Vic's bond is tested like never before and changes everything they believe to be true about the power of love and the simple beauty of being home for the holidays.
