Four Must-Haves for A Holiday Romance
by Stacy Gail

Before I begin, I’d like to thank Stella and Anna for asking me to participate in Let It Snow Books 2013! Today I’m talking about STARTING FROM SCRATCH, a military homecoming-themed holiday novella, which fits right in with the celebration of holiday books. It’s one half of Carina Press’s GIFTS OF HONOR, with the other half comprised of Rebecca Crowley’s wonderful story, HERO’S HOMECOMING. Happy holidays, everyone!

The holiday rush is on! Between the shopping, baking, decorating and wrapping, it’s a wonder anyone has time to read a book. That’s why I have mad love for novellas this time of year—I get the benefit of a full story in bite-sized form. But not just any type of novella will do for me this time of year. My reads, when I have time for them, had better deliver on my personal list of Christmassy requirements. Such as:

Jingle my bells: Like I said, I can’t invest huge amounts of time in a book during the holidays. Give me my fix of seasonal goodness in one deeply concentrated shot. With Christmas cookies, tree decorating and a gingerbread house of horrors in STARTING FROM SCRATCH, I did my best to make sure the Christmas spirit leapt (like lords-a-leaping :D) off of every page.

Gimme the feels, yo: I love a good ugly-cry. In It’s A Wonderful Life, I sob every stinkin’ time George Bailey has his revelation and Clarence gets his wings. When I wrote the final scene in STARTING FROM SCRATCH, it took two days to write three pages. Why? Because I kept crying myself into a migraine. But that was how I knew I was doing it right. Tortured weeping = holiday magic (not to mention I happy-dance whenever someone tells me that STARTING FROM SCRATCH made them sob out loud).

It’s a miracle: There has to be something gasp-worthy in my holiday entertainment to make it memorable. When all is lost and there isn’t a hope left in the world, a glimmer of brilliance appears on the horizon. For Ralphie in A Christmas Story, it was getting his Red Rider BB gun. For Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, it was waking up to a second chance on Christmas morning. For my characters Lucy and Sully, it’s a special delivery that no one saw coming. I would say more, but just thinking about it makes me sniffly. :’)

Love is all you need: I’m pretty picky when it comes to heroes. If he understands that the light of his life comes from a good woman for whom he’ll do absolutely anything, then I’ll adore him forever. My hero, Sully, is that kind of guy. Even when he can’t remember the life he once shared with Lucy, nothing will stop him from starting from scratch with her, and building a new love that will last a lifetime.

Sound interesting? Here’s the blurb for STARTING FROM SCRATCH:

Christmas is the perfect time to start from scratch

Lieutenant Sully Jax saved his unit during an IED attack, but he couldn't save his marriage. He can't even remember it. Recovered from his injuries, he's come home to the family and friends he knows—and an ex-wife who's a stranger to him.

Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She's finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully's back, and she can't deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?

Sully might not remember Lucy, but something inside won't let her go. With every bite of her cookies, he finds a new love for Lucy, and he soon realizes he wants to rebuild his life… with her by his side.

A competitive figure skater from the age of eight, Stacy Gail began writing stories in between events to pass the time. By the age of fourteen, she told her parents she was either going to be a figure skating coach who was also a published romance writer, or a romance writer who was also a skating pro. Now with a day job of playing on the ice with her students, and writing everything from steampunk to cyberpunk, contemporary to paranormal at night, both dreams have come true.
