Interview with Jen Frederick + Giveaway

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming to Ex Libris Jen Frederick, author of the popular and beloved NA Woodlands series. Jen is celebrating the release of Unraveled, book #3 in her series, and she was kind to tell us a bit more about how Unraveled came to be and what you can expect from its hero and heroine. So join us for a first glimpse and you could even win the series!

Stella: Hi Jen, welcome to Ex Libris and congrats on your new release! Could you tell us a bit about your Woodlands series? Why do you choose military heroes? What is their appeal for you? (besides the obvious: that they are responsible, hunky patriot heroes ;-p)

Jen: I get all my ideas from the news. I’m like the NA version of Law & Order. “Ripped from the headlines.” During the economic down turn, there was an article in the New York Times about how luxurious houses were being rented for pittances by college students. I thought it would be a great idea to set five guys in a house and watch them all fall in love.

As for why I wrote about Marines? Well, who doesn’t love a fit man in uniform whose desire is to protect the women that they love?

Stella: *sighs* Could you tell us about the inspiration for the latest story, Unraveled?

Jen: There was an article I read about the proliferation of young widows due to the number of young men we lost due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It seemed natural to pair a former Army widow with another military man.

Stella: Weren't you afraid that it would be a bit too dark, intense for a NA story?

Jen: Not at all. Despite the topic of grief, the book is peppered with humor—particularly the banter between the roommates and former Marines Gray is visiting—and steamy moments that alleviate what could be too weighty.

Stella: Now could you introduce the hero and heroine of Unraveled to our readers?

Jen: Gray Phillips is a twenty-five year old Marine who recently received a promotion but he’s not sure if he wants to reenlist or separate and start a civilian life. He hasn’t had a real girlfriend since his first cheated on him and doesn’t believe that relationships can survive deployments and separations. And he has definite ideas about hookups:

"It's not that hook ups aren't good but it's like the difference between a nice song and an awesome concert. One is a three-minute interlude. The other is an event. The better you know your partner, the better the sex is.”

Sam Anderson is a twenty-two year old whose life up to this point was defined by the fact she was married and widowed before the age of twenty. Her Army husband died while deployed. She thinks the perfect guy would be one who would watch Downton Abbey and knit with her. Then she meets Gray, another military man, and she falls hard.

“Hey, are you okay? Do you need to take a break?" Gray stopped and turned to look at me.

Yes, I need to take a break and bash my head against the rocks until the image of the two of us naked is flushed from my mind. Out loud, I said, "Nope," and gave him the fakest smile in two counties.

He looked at me suspiciously but as he couldn't read my mind, thank God, he just turned around. Every time I started thinking of Gray in a sexual way, I stabbed myself with an imaginary knitting needle. Good thing it was imaginary because I would've bled out about a third of the way up.

Bestselling author Jen Frederick lives with her husband, child, and one rambunctious dog. She's been reading stories all her life but never imagined writing one of her own. Jen loves to hear from readers so drop her a line at

Twenty-five-year-old Sgt. Gray Phillips is at a crossroads in his life: stay in the Marine Corps or get out and learn to be a civilian? He’s got forty-five days of leave to make up his mind but the people in his life aren’t making the decision any easier. His dad wants him to get out; his grandfather wants him to stay in. And his growing feelings for Sam Anderson are wreaking havoc with his heart…and his mind. He believes relationships get ruined when a Marine goes on deployment. So now he’s got an even harder decision to make: take a chance on Sam or leave love behind and give his all to the Marines.

Twenty-two year old Samantha Anderson lost her husband to an IED in Afghanistan just two months after their vows. Two years later, Sam is full of regrets—that she didn’t move with her husband to Alaska; that she allowed her friends to drift away; that she hasn’t taken many chances in life. Now, she’s met Gray and taking a risk on this Marine could be her one opportunity to feel alive and in love again. But how can she risk her heart on another military man who could share the same tragic fate as her husband?
