Today's guest is a girl after my own heart: she loves watching TV series (I do too!), she's passionate about Buffy (Best show ever!) and she can rewatch Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth countless times (Count me in!)! Please give the warmest welcome to

Lori Brighton my TV-series-soul-sister!

Before there were books…there was television.
by Lori Brighton

Okay, maybe not, but for me it’s true. I’ve always had a huge imagination and loved stories, but often my way of experiencing fiction was through television shows. Instant gratification with the click of a button! Even now I often find myself picking up the remote before picking up a book. I know, it sounds rather blasphemous coming from an author!

Maybe because I spend so much time writing and working on my own books, watching T.V. is easier than having to actually read words. But there is another reason I turn on the television. Watching a show is the perfect way to get into the mood when writing. If I’m working on a historical romance, I can click on Pride and Prejudice, the Colin Firth edition, of course. Instantly the characters, the costumes and music take me to a new era and put me in a mindset that helps me write.

So what are some of my favorite television shows?

This is probably my all-time favorite television show. When I discovered Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I found a dramedy that combined sarcastic humor, a tough heroine, romance to die for, along with the paranormal. What more could you want? The show made me laugh and cry, and the suspense had me sitting on the edge of my seat. For a budding romance author, the love story between Buffy and Angel is the stuff of legends. Last episode of season two, that’s all I’m going to say. If you’re a Buffy fan, you’ll get it.

In fact, there is one episode in particular which helped spur the idea for my newest release, The Mind Readers. In this episode Buffy can hear people’s thoughts and almost goes insane because of it. If you haven’t seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer (not the movie, the show!) and you’re a fan of the paranormal, seriously, go out and rent season one now!

The quirky show Gilmore Girls was just plain charming and fun. From the first episode, I was hooked on this sweet mother/daughter relationship. The witty comments, verbal banter, two fun female leads, a quaint New England town and plenty of love triangles! Every time an episode ended, I felt better about life and had a silly smile upon my face. It also made me want to move to New England.

I think you have to be a true lover of romance novels to get this T.V. show. Two teen boys, both cute. One is born on the wrong side of the tracks, is soulful and poetic, lusting after the popular girl. The other is rich, popular and sort of an ass. Beta and Alpha males. Throw in a couple of love interests and you have the plot line for any romance novel!

But it’s the relationship between the unpopular and smart Haley who falls for the popular alpha Nate, which had me regularly tuning in. Granted, the newer episodes don’t exactly warm my heart like the earlier episodes, so make sure to start with season one!

I found Being Human on BBC America, but if you don’t get BBC America, the U.S. has started their own version of the series on the SyFy channel. I know, usually the idea of a U.S. remake has us shuddering, but this U.S. version is actually good. Being Human has everything a lover of paranormal could want: vampires, werewolves and ghosts! There’s plenty of humor and even more emotion as these characters try to accept who they are and the powers they hold.

One of my favorite characters is the BBC version of Annie, the ghost. She’s such a sweet, atypical ghost that you can’t help but like her. Actually, when I was writing the secondary character, Camile, for my book The Ghost Hunter, I used Annie as my guide.

In my opinion, any historical (especially if it has romance) on BBC or PBS is certainly worth watching. Recently Downton Abbey caught my interest. But you can also find remakes of Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, one of my favorites!) and another favorite, Jane Eyre. After watching one of these, I always want to delve into working on a historical book.
Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (Original UK Unedited Edition)

Honorable mentions/Just for fun:

Then there are those shows that don’t necessarily make me want to write, but just hold my interest or are plain fun.

Modern Family: The Complete First Season

Three different families, all a little insane, equal lots of crazy moments and laughter.

Cougar Town: The Complete First Season

This show makes me laugh on so many levels. It’s a bit crazy, the characters can be a bit cruel to each other, and the mother is a bit obsessive where her son is concerned. Sadly, the mother reminds me of how I will probably be with my son when he’s older.

Bones: The Complete Second Season

An FBI agent and a smart, no-nonsense woman work together to solve crimes and fight their attraction. FBI agent Booth is a hero to die for; honorable and brave. His anthropologist costar is so emotionally clueless that you can’t help but like her.

These are just a handful of shows I’ve loved over the years. Believe me, there are more! Now it’s your turn! Tell me your must see television shows. Three people will win a download of The Ghost Hunter and The Mind Readers!

The Ghost Hunter, a Paranormal RomanceAshley Hunter is intent on uncovering the truth about her father's disappearance. But Ashley realizes she's in for more than she bargained. Not only has she inherited a decrepit pub, she's also inherited ghosts and demons. Then Cristian arrives, a mysterious man who insists he only needs a room to rent. She believes him, until one by one her ghosts start disappearing...

As a fallen angel destined for a life of servitude, Cristian Lucius is relegated to protecting earth from unwanted spirits. But he can’t accomplish this daunting task alone. He requires assistance from the very woman who frustrates him as much as she intrigues him. Cristian is determined to ignore his intense attraction for Ashley, and focus on his mission. If they don’t work together, they won’t have a chance in hell of defeating the demon threatening their lives. The problem is getting Ashley to trust him. No easy task, for Cristian is the very man responsible for her father’s disappearance.

The Mind Readers, A Young Adult Paranormal RomanceCameron Winters is a freak. Fortunately, no one but her family knows that Cameron can read minds. When Lewis Douglas arrives, he tempts her with possibilities of freedom. Determined to embrace her hidden talents, Cameron heads to a place where she meets other Mind Readers. But when the Mind Readers realize the extent of Cameron’s abilities, they want to use her powers for their own needs.

I completely agree with you Lori: Buffy is one of my alltime favourite series: I love the quirky humour, the action and the romance, I've never seen a show which combined it so uniquely!

I was a late bloomer regarding Gilmore Girls, I started watching it once it has already finished airing, but boy did I immediately fall for it!  Lauren Graham and her witty banter is awesome! (Bonus cookie: I initiated my mom and we watched it together :-)

I LOVE P&P! Can't tire of rewatching it a couple of times every year, Mr. Darcy's romantic passion always manages to make me tingle the way he stares at Lizzie standing at the piano. mmm.. *sighs*

If I have to add a couple of my fav TV series you haven't mentioned I would have to nominate:

Cute and laugh-out loud funny!

Choking of laughter funny! One word: Sheldon!!

Being Erica

This show should really get more recognition, it is wonderful. And dare to tell me you wouldn't want to be in Erica's place and go back in time to fix your past regrets and mistakes, I dare you!
