Why I am falling in love with Contemporary Romances - Guest post by Felicia

Why I am falling in love with Contemporary Romances
by Felicia

Hi Everyone! When Stella asked if I would do a guest post while she was off on vacation, it took only about 5 seconds for me to say yes. See, I have this new found love I want to share with everyone: Contemporary Romance.

A little background to put my new love in perspective: I started reading romances back in the early 80’s and for the longest time all I would read is Historicals. Back then they were called Bodice Rippers and would include Sheiks, Pirates, Highland Warriors, and English Knights. During the hot summer Texas days, you could catch my teenage self escaping the heat but escaping into these Historical worlds. Oddly enough it was two of my favorite historical writers that moved me into the Paranormal world: Jude Deveraux and Linda Leal Miller...

Now we are into the early 90’s and I am actively hunting down every Paranormal Romance that can be found. I am pretty sure that my heart will forever be latched to these vampires, werewolves, and others. Back then, I would include anything that had paranormal creatures, time travel, or fantasy elements. A Knight in Shining Armor and Wishes both by Jude Deveraux swept me off my feet combining my love of historicals and then adding in the element of Time Travel/Fairy Godmothers. I started hunting down books that had that little extra element and soon traveled into my first Vampire Romance series....

I fell in love with vampire series (and other paranormals) right there on the spot and never looked back! There were occasional brushes with Chick-lit (some of them I liked, others I did not), thrillers (ok they are my guilty pleasure read but to many back to back frighten me), and non-fiction. I can say without a doubt though, in the last 20 years it has always been Paranormal Romance that held my heart!

Recently though, I find myself being drawn to Contemporary Romance in all its forms. I never thought I could get lost in a contemporary romance because of my preconceived notions. I mean most of them are set in places where I have been (I travel), contain characters (Cowboys, Geeks, Lawyers) that I would compare to people I knew, and all that would lead to me either getting completely upset at the lead characters or totally not believing the situations that they were in.

Oh how wrong I was.....

What I have found is that things I was scared of, are the things I love about Contemporary Romance. Bottom line: it feels real to me. I don’t know if it is the familiar settings or characters that I feel I could meet in real life but these books are slowly winning me over.

I mostly blame the Maya Banks KGI series! I fell in love with that series immediately (loved the family) and read them back-to-back. All I kept thinking is I couldn’t believe there were Romance Action books. I didn’t know they existed. Then along came Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jennifer Crusie. Bet Me but Jennifer Crusie made me laugh so much that I read it twice. The women in their books were very real---they tripped, screwed up, laughed, loved, were shy, and most of all I could see myself doing some of the same things they did. My favorite Contemporary Romance read of this year would have to be Shannon Stacey Kowalski series. It made me laugh out loud several times and I have recommended it to several friends.

Since the beginning of this year I have read 3 times as many Contemporary Romances than I have the last 4 years combined. Overall, I would say they rank above Historicals in my book now but Paranormal still has my heart.

The moral of this story: don’t be afraid to go outside your normal genre reading range---you might be surprised at what you will find!

So do you love Contemporary Romance? If so, why?
