High School Sweethearts and Reunited Lovers
by Joya Fields

Thanks very much for inviting me here today to celebrate the release of my romantic suspense, and to chat about high school sweethearts and reunited lovers.

How much do we know about love and relationships when we’re in high school? Do we really know what love is? Or if someone is right for us? Heck, it’s even hard to choose a college major because there are so many choices and it’s pretty darn scary to make a career decision when we’re so new to adulthood. I have to make a confession here: I am biased about high school sweethearts because I married mine and we’ve been happily married for twenty-six years. But sometimes high school sweethearts grow apart. The things they had in common as teenagers disappear and they go their separate ways. They made it through prom, senior week, and all the drama of graduation, but then summer brings a new reality. Work or college. And that’s when a lot of high school couples find out how very different they really are.

Another variation of high school sweethearts is when the couple is reunited years later and rekindles their former love. Logan and Keely, the hero and heroine in , grew up in the same neighborhood, became friends, and then fell in love in high school. They made it through a magical prom and grew intimately closer. But then Logan left town without a word, leaving Keely heartbroken for months.

Ten years later, Keely’s father is attacked. Logan is a policeman and feels compelled to help solve the case which, of course, means he must come face-to-face with Keely. Fact is, she’s never been far from his mind even though it’s been ten years. His first love, his only real love. Their initial reunion is awkward. But pretty soon, they find themselves falling into comfortable patterns with each other, reigniting their old relationship. Each of them has their own reason for resisting the other—Keely won’t let him hurt her again, and Logan is keeping a dark secret.

Some of the best real-life romances I’ve heard of involve reunited friends or lovers. Time heals. Time changes us. Or maybe the timing is finally right, when it wasn’t before. High school reunions are a great place to reconnect with friends and former lovers. I’ve even heard several stories about couples who didn’t even know each other in high school, yet connected at a reunion, or another gathering with friends they had in common, and discovered they liked each other, dated for a while, and then got married. I love those happy endings!

What do you think? Can you ever forget your first love? Do you ever wonder “what if?” when you think of your first crush or love? I’d love to hear your experience. Thanks very much for stopping by today and I wish you much happiness whether you’re in love or looking for love. Hey…maybe if you’re still looking, you’ll meet up soon with someone you went to high school with!
