Interview with Susan Wiggs + Giveaway

The holidays are fast approaching so to get you in the festive mood I have another guest author celebrating a Christmas release: please give a warm welcome to Susan Wiggs who is here to tell us about her latest novel, Candlelight Christmas.

Stella: Hi Susan, welcome back to Ex Libris! Could you please introduce yourself in a few words to our readers?

SW: Sure! I’m like your readers–a wife, sister, mom, daughter, stepmom, dog owner, friend...

I phone my parents every day, as they are elderly and adorable, and they read me stories every day of my freakishly normal childhood. I was a writer before I learned to read, by creating scribbles on paper and dictating the stories to my saintly mother. You can see examples here.

I still read and write everyday and I've gotten very good at it. I live in a ridiculously gorgeous place in the world--an island in Puget Sound, Washington with my husband, our dogs and a lot of wildlife. And slugs. Really big slugs.

Here is my official web site and I’m on Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter and Pinterest, to name a few. Probably the most active on Facebook.

Stella: Can you share with us how an idea, an inspiration becomes reality, a published story?

SW: Well, first the inspiration has to turn into a novel. That’s the hardest part. :) The longer answer is that the idea has to be big and complicated enough to keep the writer–and later the reader–engaged for hundreds of pages. It involves weeks and months of writing and rewriting. Then the publishing process takes over–editing, revisions, proofreading. CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS was conceived a few years ago, so it’s really gratifying to have the book in readers’ hands right now.

Stella: Your brand new release Candlelight Christmas was released on October 29th, congratulations! Care to tell readers what they can expect of this story?

SW: CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS is about one of the most intriguing and complicated characters in The Lakeshore Chronicles. Logan O’Donnell got a rocky start into adulthood and finds himself a single father, devoted to his son Charlie, but desperately lonely for something more. Not coincidentally, Logan shares a lot of traits with my husband–a sexy single dad with an adorable boy, an affinity for snow sports and a singular talent in the kitchen. Neither guy is single no more.

Stella: Candlelight Christmas is the 10th secret, how do you keep things fresh and exciting after so many characters and stories and happily ever afters?

SW: Stories are like people–there is an endless variety. I never tire of exploring them. I also study my craft and try to hone my skills every day. My favorite way to keep things fresh is to read, try new things (like sports) and travel. There is always something new right around the corner. The surfing scene in CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS is based on my visit to a surf camp in Costa Rica last year. It was my first time surfing, and I’m hooked!

Stella: Could you introduce the hero and heroine of Candlelight Christmas to us?

SW: Darcy in CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS is funny, smart, athletic and quirky. And very entertaining. She has a way of saying cheesy things without seeming cheesy, like “It's better to risk everything for something you believe in than to hide in a place where you're safe from harm.” Or sometimes she says something that makes no sense at all, and yet it makes perfect sense: “Forever is worth waiting for.” She is an interesting match for Logan O’Donnell, our sexy single dad who discovers how lonely he is, and how much he needs a big change in his life.

Jennifer Lawrence
Stella: If Candlelight Christmas was made into a movie/TV series, who would you cast for the characters?

SW: Jennifer Lawrence. Is there anyone else these days? Logan should be played by someone classy, athletic and fun–with a big heart. Any suggestions?

Stella: Candlelight Christmas is a Christmas romance set around the holidays. In what way is it different to set a story during this festive time, does it have any influence on the plot, characters, scenes, etc?

SW: The holiday governs the pace, mood and tone of the story. The weather is always a factor. Readers are looking for a warm and fuzzy read, one that reminds them of the things we all love about this special time of year.

Stella: Speaking of holidays, which one is your favorite and how do you celebrate it?

SW: Oh, I’m a traditionalist. I love everything about Christmas–the sounds, the smells, the visits from friends and family, the secrets and gifts and parties, and the sense that we are all one family.

Stella: Would you like to share with us your future plans, what shall we be on the lookout from
you next?

SW: Several of my novels will be reissued in 2014, in nice new packages–LAKESIDE COTTAGE, THE SUMMER HIDEAWAY, THE APPLE ORCHARD. My classic historicals THE MAIDEN OF IRELAND and THE MISTRESS OF NORMANDY will be published as well. THE BEEKEEPER’S BALL, a new hardcover release, is coming out next June. Busy, busy.... Candlelight Christmas by Susan Wiggs

A single father who yearns to be a family man, Logan O'Donnell is determined to create the perfect Christmas for his son, Charlie. The entire O'Donnell clan arrives to spend the holidays in Avalon, a postcard-pretty town on the shores of Willow Lake, a place for the family to reconnect and rediscover the special gifts of the season.

One of the guests is a newcomer to Willow Lake— Darcy Fitzgerald. Sharp-witted, independent and intent on guarding her heart, she's the last person Logan can see himself falling for. And Darcy is convinced that a relationship is the last thing she needs this Christmas.

Yet between the snowy silence of the winter woods, and toasty moments by a crackling fire, their two lonely hearts collide. The magic of the season brings them each a gift neither ever expected—a love to last a lifetime.

Susan Wiggs's life is all about family, friends...and fiction. She's been featured in the national media, including NPR's Talk of the Nation, and is a popular speaker locally and nationally.
